Ribera del Duero
Lying to the north-west of Madrid, and south of Burgos, this DO
straddles the river Duero which flows west to Portugal where it becomes
the Douro. Ribera del Duero has become one of Spain’s most
fashionable and indeed best quality wine regions. This has led to heavy
investment in many new “bodegas” and a huge increase in wine
production. Its vineyards, largely growing Tinto del Pais, the
local version of Tempranillo, benefit from high altitude, long periods
of sunshine and cold nights even in summer. This helps to produce
intensely fruity wines. The younger “joven” wines are
characteristically bright and clean while “crianzas” typically have a
longer finish and delicious vanilla and spice flavours from their time
in oak casks. Ribera del Duero wines are an ideal accompaniment to
lamb, beef and game. |
