Rioja
Rioja is often considered as synonymous with Spanish wine. The wine
region extends for almost 100 miles, east to west along the Ebro valley
in central North Eastern Spain. The area is bounded by mountains on
each side and has a relatively mild climate with wet springs and short
summers.
Rioja’s hallmark grapes are the red Tempranillo and the white Viura.
Its wines were traditionally aged in oak to give a very smooth finish
and a powerful, oaky nose and flavour. Length of aging was regarded as
the main determinant of quality. Today, new winemakers produce
“modern” style lighter and fruitier reds for drinking young and crisp,
fresher whites. These complement the traditional styles which many
Rioja “aficionados” continue to enjoy. |
