Penedès
The Penedès region slopes upwards from the Mediterranean southwest of
Barcelona up to a height of 700 metres in the interior. With
vineyards at different heights enjoying varying micro-climates, the
region produces many styles of red, white and rosé wines as well as
Cava. Penedès whites, typically made from Macabeo, and Xarell-lo
are characteristically fresh, light and fruity. The reds mainly from
Garnacha and Tempranillo, also tended to be lighter in style although
new fuller bodied wines are now produced using grape varieties such as
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. |
